Sleep Medicine

Sleep is a function of the brain and sleep disorders are a subspecialty of neurology called neurosomnology. Sleep disorders medicine is the broad term to encompass the clinical spectrum of sleep pathology that reaches internal medicine, pulmonology, psychiatry, otorhinolaryngology, and pediatrics.

The Sleep Center at our Upstate Community Campus, established in 1987, is fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine External Icon and is affiliated with Upstate Medical University through the Sleep clinic at the University Health Care Center.

Sleep Center Staff

  • Five specialists with certification in sleep medicine
  • 10 registered technologists
  • 3 office assistants

All clinical conditions affecting sleep of adults and children older than 5 years, are evaluated in the Sleep Center. Some of these include sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, parasomnias, sleep-eating disorders and sleep epilepsy, to name only the most common alterations of sleep. Polysomnography and actigraphy are performed daily in the Sleep Center.

Patients referred to the Sleep Center at CGH or to the Sleep Clinic at UHCC are initially evaluated by a physician certified in sleep disorders. By special request of the referring provider, patients may be tested directly without previous clinical evaluation. Patients evaluated by Sleep Center physicians are followed by the same sleep specialist, at necessary intervals, when appropriate.
